Ally Thomas shares a short story from her upcoming paranormal fantasy book called Zombie Wolf: The Next Generation #1. You can click here to read it for FREE in the zombie anthology, Darlings of Decay.

At twenty-four Zachary has been through many zombie outbreaks and knows how to stay alive. He’s been so good at killing zombies for so many years that he makes a living at it. He claims it’s the reason he has the nickname the ‘Zombie Wolf,’ even though he knows that’s not the case.

With time and space travel being as common as the Internet and cell phones, Zachary and his team travel often to kill zombies and rid the solar system of total infestation. Now in the year 3015 A.D., more sightings of zombies are being reported on Planet Earth, but no one knows how to kill these snake-like creatures. Zachary’s destiny unfolds when he comes face to face with the next generation of zombie and an innocent bystander gets bitten. He considers killing the attractive girl because she’s as good as dead anyways. But when he sees she has a werewolf mark, same as what he has, he knows he must save her.

Happy Monday everyone! It’s that time again. Thanksgiving is behind us and it’s on to Christmas. Each Monday through December, I’ll be participating in the Manday Monday Hotties Blog Hop sponsored by Felicity Heaton.

Today I’m featuring a favorite picture of mine I used while creating the character, Blick from The Vampire from Hell series. I based my composite of Blick on the actor Ryan Reynolds.

Here’s an excerpt featuring Blick from my series, the Vampire from Hell (Part 2) – A Vampire Among Angels

“Have you been up all night…again?”

Blick found me on the terrace, gazing at the ocean.  It was the break of dawn, and he was headed out for another day of training.  I wanted to ask him if he was okay with my missing a lot of our martial arts practice sessions, but I forgot the question when I saw him.  I feared my sleep deprivation was causing me to hallucinate, and then I remembered Blick’s change.

Since arriving at the House of G, Blick had transformed from his Lycan-Underworld-movie look to that of a tall, unassuming man with chiseled facial features and gleaming gold eyes.

“I can’t get used to your shift into human form.  Your goatee is very nice.  You are handsome for a hellhound, you know?”

“Is that a sense of humor I detect today?” he replied, ignoring my observation.  He was confident and determined standing there in his workout clothes which consisted of a bright white T-shirt clinging to his tanned lean frame, a pair of royal blue gym shorts, and white sneakers.  The wind from the sea pushed a few wisps of his jet black hair into his eyes and he brushed them aside.

Hearing the love in his soft baritone voice was music to my ears.  Since we didn’t need to be secretive anymore, we had fallen out of the habit of talking to each other telepathically.

“What about the nightmares?” he asked.

Tears rose in my eyes.  I gritted my teeth and fought to compose myself, so I didn’t burst out crying like a little girl in front of him.  “Ongoing,” I muttered.  “Anytime I try to sleep, I see Father and Stephanie turn into monstrous snakes and chase after me.”  Because I hadn’t been able to sleep for weeks, my life consisted of three activities: wandering around Blick’s home, surfing on my computer, or hanging out on the terrace (usually at night).

He nodded and placed his hand on my forehead, checking my body temperature.  “You’re burning up,” he insisted.

“I think that’s just how I am now.”  I smiled up at him weakly.  The seven-foot hellhound I had raised from a pup in Hell was actually a seven-foot shapeshifting angel who was trying his best to take care of me.  I called him ‘Papa’ especially when he was fussing over why my health was steadily declining.  Blick wasn’t the only one worried about me.  I was too.

“A friend is coming by later with some supplements.  Will you answer the door this time, please?” he asked.

“Sure.”

We stood on the terrace of his home in silence for a few moments, watching the waves.  About eight two-story properties of high ranking angels including Blick’s home lined a sandy white beach nestled in a cove.  His home was in the center of the arch-shaped cove, and I could look out from the terrace on the second floor and see the ocean.  Towards the east, the ocean stretched out to what seemed like infinity.  It was more beautiful than I’d imagined oceans could be.  Now in the morning sunlight, the water glistened and danced, merging into hues of light blue and green.  Were the oceans on Earth this blue?  One day, I thought to myself, one day I’ll find out.

Excerpt from The Vampire from Hell Returns (Part 4)

If I could count the times I have woken up tied to a chair, I’d be a millionaire by now.  That’s where I found myself when I heard the voice of Stephanie, my demon sister.
“Welcome to Hell! We’re having a party in your honor, and you’re sleeping through it,
sssister,” she hissed.
I felt a blow blast across the right side of my head.  A hit delivered by someone I couldn’t see.  A blow for my sister’s amusement.

“What a lovely welcome home, dear sister!” I said sarcastically as I raised my head.It was on now. I smacked my mouth open wide, cranking my neck upwards as I extended my fangs.  The freakier I could look, the better, I thought.  When I surged my head upwards, a sharp pain sliced into my neck.  Something restrained me.  My fangs flipped inwardly and retreated to their hiding spot in the roof of my mouth. I tasted my own blood, and I had not bitten my tongue.  This could be bad, I thought.

“I’d be careful if I were you, sissy,” Stephanie said.  “That collar has spikes going into your neck.  The more you move, the more Typhean there will turn the corkscrew that holds the collar together.  The spikes are drilling into your neck.  If you jump suddenly, it’ll rip your head off, and then where will you be? One dead vampire.”

Mia Darien is my featured author this week on my blog. (Also read “Meet Guest Author Mia Darien and Get Cameron’s Law for Free”.)

Get ‘Darlings of Decay’ for FREE

I met Mia through our love for zombies, not vampires. Mia has a story entitled Decent which is in the newly released Darlings of Decay zombie anthology. Mia’s story is available for download in Darlings of Decay for Free at Smashwords.

I asked her to share with our readers more about why she wrote Decent. If I can add a story about a Zombie Wolf to this anthology, then I think it is great Mia featured her story on Zombie Horses.  Read more below.

From Mia about “Decent”

When I was asked if I wanted to include a story in the then-untitled “Darlings of Decay” anthology, along with some amazing other authors, I was of course humbled but then jumped right on top of it. As I didn’t have the time to write something new, I asked if I could submit something already written and released. As I could, it came down to my two “zombies only” short stories. (My paranormal stuff has some zombies in it, but it’s not the main focus of those books.)

I chose “Descent” because, basically, it’s my favorite of the two. Interestingly enough, however, it does have ties back to my primary paranormal series.

Before Adelheid was Adelheid, it was a series called Preternatural, Unlimited. I was a teenager when I started writing that one. Some of it is the same–Sadie and Dakota, for example–but the first book of the first series is wildly different than the first book of the Adelheid series. And thankfully so, because that first book was rife with problems. They all are when we’re starting out.

In the first book, there was a bad guy who was a witch from olden, olden days. She was the one who created the man-eating mares of Diomedes, which were one of the Twelve Labors of Hercules. She cursed all Diomedes’ descendants to be were-horses. I know, right? I was sixteen. What can I say? Anyways, that was her deal.

Some years later, there was a call from Permuted Press for a zombie anthology that a friend of mine was entering. I decided to give it a go and for reasons surpassing understanding, I returned to that now-long-shelved witch. She became my main character, and this was the story around the creation of those mares, and what happened after Hercules killed them.

The result? Zombie horses! c_descent

I know, right? I was twenty-two. What can I say? Anyways, it didn’t make it into the anthology, because the editor–while liking the story–wasn’t looking for animal zombies. I tried submitting it twice more, and it wasn’t evil enough for the evil anthology or weird enough for the weird one. Even though both editors said it was a very good story. Which was good, because I believed it was a very good story, too.

Eventually, I released it as a free single when I decided to start self-publishing, and also included it in an anthology for charity. So, it’s been around the block, but I’m excited to present it to a new audience in “Darlings of Decay,” because it really always has been one of my favorites. I’ve found it to be one of the creepiest things I’ve ever written, and when you write horror and paranormal, that’s a good goal.

And who knows? Adelheid has a long run yet, and we might just see equine zombies and were-horses in its future.

I’d like to thank Mia for being on my blog this week. She graciously provided me with 3 articles to share with you guys. I’ve had a blast reading her posts as well as ‘Descent’. I have to say it was a great story with wonderful imagination and steady pacing which I enjoy in a lot of short stories I read. ~ally

Newly released is the Zombie anthology, Darlings of Decay and I’m excited about its release because I have an excerpt included in the ebook called “Zombie Wolf: The Next Generation.” If you are a fan of my series, The Vampire from Hell you may want to read this short story. It is set in the year 3015 A.D. featuring a werewolf who was born with a blood virus. His mother is a vampire from Hell and his father is a hellhound turned werewolf. Sound familiar?

Meet Zachary, the Zombie Wolf.

I thought it would be fun to set a story around a child of Rayea and Blick’s. This is assuming that they actually get together, are married at some point, and live happily ever after with a son (if it occurs in that order). It’s a possibility for where the Vampire from Hell series may be headed. But it’s just a possibility.

What is the story “Zombie Wolf: The Next Generation” about?

At twenty-four Zachary has been through many zombie outbreaks and knows how to stay alive. He’s been so good at killing zombies for so many years that he makes a living at it. He claims it’s the reason he has the nickname the ‘Zombie Wolf,’ even though he knows that’s not the case.

You can read Zombie Wolf (the short story) in Darlings of Decay. It is FREE at Smashwords | Live at Amazon

“Darlings of Decay (Zombie Stories From Your Favorite Zombie Authors)” went live this week.

From anthology coordinator and Zombie author, Kristen Middleton, “This anthology will be free on Smashwords starting Monday! It’ll be available on Amazon for a price for a few weeks but will eventually be free there, too (and most other popular eBook sites). Over twenty female authors with chilling tales of death, decay, and a diligence to survive in a world overtaken by the dead. Watch for it!!!”

Here’s an Excerpt from “Zombie Wolf”:

“Zachary, this isn’t something you need to get involved in.  Just let it go.  I’ll call Containment.  We’ll act like it didn’t happen.  We don’t need this kind of trouble.”

Instantly I reacted.  My body went rigid.  She wasn’t going to be put down.  I owed it to my werewolf heritage to try to save her.  I had heard my mom’s version of my mom and dad’s romance.  Dad had never gone into details, but I knew what he had done to save my mom because she had told me.  I wasn’t anybody’s fool.  I decided to use some of my mom’s logic on my dad.

“Did you leave Mom in Hell to rot when she was turned into a vampire?  Did you?  A daughter of Satan?  When she drank Satan’s blood, you were there.  She told me.  You were there to see her change into a vampire.  That was not by accident.  You knew then who she really was, and how important she was.  She wasn’t evil like everyone thought, and you knew that.  You never doubted her even when she did.  Her exact words.  Over the years, you’ve done everything you can to save her.  Every time she has needed saving.  Mom told me!”

“Your mother is a writer.  She exaggerates,” my dad replied, rolling his eyes toward the ceiling.  “Who is this girl to you anyways, Zach?  You don’t even know her?”

“I get that.  I’m not an idiot.”  I tried to control my rage.  “I’m not sure, Dad.  But I felt it when I saw her in the coffee shop.  I don’t want to regret later that I could have done something, you know?  I don’t want to live alone, being the only freak of nature, a werewolf zombie even if it means I can walk among them undetected.  I don’t want that!  If I don’t try to save her, I won’t know.  Now will I?  What if she too was born with the new virus?  What if that makes her unique like me?”

“That would explain the mark.  Maybe she was born with the virus.  Who is her father or mother?  Your aunt?  This may be beyond your abilities, son.  I’m sorry.  We don’t save zombies.  We destroy them.  We have to stay on top of this situation before it gets worse among the vampires and werewolves.”

Cover design by Ally Thomas

“It’s gotten worse, Dad.  It’s jumped species.  I know it.”

“Do you have proof,” he challenged.

I pointed to the girl in the cage.  “She’s a werewolf, Dad.  She told me so.”

Not believing me, he grunted.

Using his same logic, I rebelled.  He had to understand what he was saying.  Rules were meant to be bent sometimes, even broken.

“Before there were zombies,” I began.  “Werewolves used to kill vampires.  And yet, you didn’t kill Mom.  You were there to protect her.”  As best I could, I faced Dad head on.  I made a point to thrust my chin up and glare up at him like I had seen my mom doing on more than one occasion.  With his height, he had no problem looking down at me, but he had to know I wasn’t backing down.  I hadn’t backed down against Rex and the others, and I wasn’t backing down now.  As insane as it seemed, I wasn’t wrong about this.

Dad searched my face for many minutes.  The silence in the room thickened.  I could hear only the girl’s ragged breathing as she fought the poison.

Trying to remain calm, I refused to look away from my dad, glaring up at him.  I was ready to take on the world.  My god, I thought.  What has happened to me?  I turned my attention back to the girl.  She had slowly approached my side of the cage and stood near me, also glaring over my shoulder at my dad.  Her blonde hair was tousled amid her face, but I could see the distrust behind her eyes.  Even in her chaotic state, she looked adorable.

In typical parent fashion, my dad reached out his hand and rubbed his fingers through my black hair, somewhat shaking my entire body.  He was unbelievably strong.  He did that dismissal move on me when he wanted me to know that, for now, he was tabling the situation.  I knew it wasn’t over.

“We’ll have to address this if your experiment doesn’t work.  Okay?” he asked.

“Yes, sir,” I replied.

Finally he patted me on the shoulder.  “I forget how stubborn, like your mother, you are.”  He chuckled and walked to the door.

Realizing I had gotten my way and he was leaving me to my task, I watched as he lingered at the door.  “You know,” he said.  “You are the son of a vampire with healing blood.  Maybe that can help.”

The Vampire from Hell Returns (Part 4) Update

Work on the next installment in the Vampire from Hell (Part 4) continues. A late summer release is still on the calendar. The reason I’m bringing it up is because Part 4 is going to have a cliffhanger ending.  I typically do this with most of my books. Read “Coming Soon.”

Oh yeah, zombies!

I’m a fan of zombies, right behind vampires. And I’ve wanted to write a zombie story for several years now. When I was given the opportunity to include a short story in a Zombie anthology coming out very soon, I decided to revamp my zombie idea and get to writing. (Yes, I used a vampire pun. Lol!)

Be sure to check out the cover and description of the story below.
